Week #13 Stash Report

This week I used 1 yd - Dogs in the Doghouse and 3.5 - mystery quilt for a total of 4.5 yards. I can't believe I'm halfway to my goal of busting 150 yards for the year! Now for the other number, there was a quilt show this weekend....and I bought NOTHING! I'm so proud of myself!!!

My numbers to date:
  • Fabric Added: 0 yards
  • Fabric Added to Date: 43 yards
  • Fabric Used: 4.5 yards
  • Fabric Used to Date: 74.75 yards
  • Net Used: 31.75 yards

Goals for the week:

  • Piece blocks for mystery quilt
  • Make Apple Cider Medallion block #5
  • Start on Washington Medallion HSTs

My goals are pretty ambitious for this week. It's going to be another crazy week at work.

Quilt Show

This morning I went to the Manitowoc Quilt Show. Here are a couple of my favorite quilts. The first two are the same pattern (a BOM that the guild did), different colorways.

This quilt was made from a Lori Smith pattern, but I don't remember the name (sorry). I love the center.

I also checked out the vendors. And would you believe it, I left with NOTHING, zip, zero, nada! Most of the fabrics were older lines. I did see the new Atkinson Designs book, Fabulous Fonts(?). I resisted and figured I'd wait for Chicago which is coming up really fast!

Of course the boys wanted to go along for a ride. Riley likes to lie down in the far back of the truck. We haven't taken out the salt bags (extra weight for in the snow) yet. This didn't stop him, he just lied down on top of them. (Please excuse the tow strap and jumper cables that hubby just threw in the back instead of wrapping them up nicely.)

Here's Sonny lying right behind the passenger seat so he can keep an eye on me. He also likes to look out the front window and "chase" (jumps from the middle to the back) the oncoming vehicles sometimes. We're stumped as to how he chooses which ones to "chase" because one time it could be a car, another a truck.

It's that time of year again. The geese are laying eggs. They have two nests, one in the back of the house and one in my flower bed in the front of the house. Hubby grabbed two eggs (from our African goose) that we knew were fresh the other day. He took them by his parents. MIL weighed the goose egg and it weighed 8 oz. Here is a picture of an egg from our Toulouse goose (which is smaller than the African's) next to a store bought Grade A Large chicken egg. Quite a difference huh? That will be some omelet!

An update on "Crabby" (as I call her) the goose that landed in the dog kennel the other day. She's back to her old, "vocal" self again. Honking when someone walks outside near her or goes past the door/window. That's her egg in the picture.

Chance Encounter

Here is the last Patchwork Party block (for now) called Chance Encounter. I'm caught up until more blocks come in the mail. It sure feels good because I have two older Patchwork Parties that I haven't even started. Last summer's at least the blocks are done. I'm working on finishing the top but one step of the instructions are wrong, and I need to correct it before I can continue.

Originally I had thought about going into work for a little bit this morning but it's cold out, and I didn't want to get out of bed early. (There was frost this morning...ugh) After this post I'm gonna get off the computer and get ready to go to the quilt show. I want to get their early because later today we're suppose to get some rain/freezing rain. I want to be home before that starts. When I get home I am going to work on cutting the fabrics below. The pattern is from a Mystery Quilts book by Rita Fishel.

I figured I better use up some stash in case some new fabric comes home with me. I'm hoping to see Patisserie and/or Legacy fabrics. Mostly I'll be probably be looking at new patterns and new books.

OK, I better get outta here and get going.

Patchwork Party

I've finished two more Patchwork Party blocks. The first one is Engagement Party and the second is Champagne Toast. I started cutting pieces for the next block. I have one more block ordered that hasn't arrived yet. Then the rest will be ordered in April.

I missed the deadline for Judy's Quilt-Along so I didn't receive the last instructions, so I just put a wider outer border on it. The fabric is purple with specks of black and teal in it. I think I should have made the last border a little wider but it's on now and that's how it's staying.

I vacuumed the living room and the stairs....it's shedding time! I also dusted and picked up in the sewing room. The books are now all back in the bookcase and fabric from Dogs in the Doghouse are put away.
I managed to catch the injured goose (see my previous post) and the couple spots where there was blood is starting to heal. Otherwise she seems alright, just shaken up. Before yesterday, she was always very vocal if we stuck our head out the patio door or went outside by them. I am more aware around her because she would sometimes hiss at me. The other geese are very friendly. She was always pretty bold, teasing the dogs when she was on the other side of the fence too, so I can't necessarily blame the dogs for going after her when she went in their kennel. As long as she stays out of their domain, she'll be fine.

Weekend Goals

I originally was taking vacation today to go on the local area shop hop. I decided not to do the shop hop (and save gas) and just go to the quilt show this weekend where all of the vendors were in one spot. I was planning on going on Sunday but we may get snow so I think I'll be going tomorrow instead. I may go into work after the show because I have a huge project going out next week. So I'll see how many emails I receive today.

So far this morning I finished another Patchwork Party block and put the final border on the top from Judy's Quilt-Along. (I'll post pictures later.)

My goals for the rest of the weekend:

  • Work on the other two Patchwork Party blocks.
  • Go to quilt show
  • Exercise - either walk outside or on treadmill
  • Read through class exercises and work on graded assignments
  • Go to work?
  • Go grocery shopping. Make scalloped potatoes and ham tomorrow. Yum!
  • Work on Rose Garden project
  • Dust
  • Get going away gift for my friend/co-worker - she's being permanently laid off and her husband lost his job in January.
Last night I (finally) watched Twilight the movie. I hate to say, I was pretty disappointed. I thought some of the vampire characters looked fake and almost "robotic". I didn't feel how much Bella and Edward loved each other. I guess I'll stick to the books. I'm not quite halfway through book 4, Breaking Dawn.

We also had a little excitement last night. Apparently the one goose flew into the dog kennel while they were outside. The boys had her pinned down and ripped a bunch of feathers off her back. Thankfully they didn't kill her or bite her, there was minimal blood, because hubby was pretty furious as it was. I understand why he'd be mad but they ARE dogs and they ARE animals and the goose was in THEIR kennel. Several years ago they got out of the kennel and killed a couple of our ducks....hubby was MAD. Hopefully the goose doesn't make that mistake again. Actually I'm still trying to figure how she got high enough to clear the fence because our geese are fat from eating all day. Usually they are lucky if they can get 2 feet off the ground.

OK time to get off the computer and get busy! Pictures coming later.

Friendship Card

I finished my 2nd Patchwork Party Spring 2009 - Friendship Card. Sorry it's pretty dark. This block caught my eye when I was looking at all the blocks for the "party". I was a little worried though that I wouldn't get it to come out because the pieces have to be accurate to match up correctly. I worried for nothing because it turned out great. (Better than some of my previous ones actually.) It really was easy to make with the templates.

I received two more blocks in the mail today. I'm trying to make the blocks as I receive them so they don't end up sitting in the closet. I only ordered six blocks this month. The other six blocks and finishing kit will get ordered next month.

Progress Report

It was a fairly productive weekend. I received two of the Patchwork Party Spring 2009 blocks yesterday. I made the block Waltzing Together today. Plus I finished my class assignment.

Yesterday I finished the binding on the 30s Pinwheel Stars and the feathered star for the Washington Medallion BOM. I didn't get last border put on Dogs in the Doghouse yet so that will be my goal for this week.

Week #12 Stash Report

I worked on several projects this week but only one that used any stash. I used 3/4 yard for the binding on 30s Pinwheel Stars. No yardage added. I did order the Patchwork Party Spring '09 blocks but I'm not counting them in my stash reports.

My numbers to date:
  • Fabric Added: 0 yards
  • Fabric Added to Date: 43 yards
  • Fabric Used: 0.75 yards
  • Fabric Used to Date: 70.25 yards
  • Net Used: 27.25 yards

Goals for the week:

  • Finish Step 4 of the Quilt-Along
  • Finish loading Snapshots in Pink
  • Start Patchwork Party Spring '09 blocks

Finish #5

I finally have another finish! The pattern is Fat Quarter Frenzy by Darlene Zimmerman and it's in the Better Homes and Gardens Quilts & More Premier Issue from 2005. I call it 30s Pinwheel Stars. This monster is 91-1/2" x 104" and it's one of my oldest UFOs. It sure feels good to finish it although it's kind of bittersweet. I had started it the week my dog Wesley got sick and we ended up losing him. I still can remember trying to cut squares and rectanges with tears in my eyes....not a good thing to do with a rotary cutter in hand, but I was trying to put my mind on other things (without much success).

Here is the latest picture of my top from Judy's Quilt-Along. After I put the sashing on I was thinking it was too much teal/turquoise but seeing it here I kinda like it. I still need to add another border. I'm think it may be the final border. Judy has about three more on her pattern, one made of HSTs. The next couple weeks are going to be pretty busy, so I may just put one more border on it and be done with it.

I also have some of the feathered star pieced together. I hope to finish it tomorrow.

We are dog-sitting for some friends. While we were waiting for the dogs to do their business outside, we played one game of bowling and tried the baseball and boxing on their Wii. It's a good thing we don't have one because I'd never get anything done.

It's been a good day!

It's the Weekend!

It was a long work week! I'm glad it's the weekend! I first got into the sewing room on Wednesday. I finished making the sub-units for the feathered star. Yesterday I decided it was time to get the binding machine down onto the 30s Pinwheel Stars. Then I worked on hand sewing it to the back while watching the boys state bball games. I worked on it some tonight too and now I'm halfway. Who made this bugger so big?!?!?

Did you know tomorrow is National Quilting Day? Are you doing anything special? The LQS is having some demos and giveaways but hubby will be home tomorrow so I'll probably stay home and work on some projects here. We'll probably be doing some "spring cleaning" too.

My goals for the weekend are:

- Finish binding
- Finish feathered star
- Cut border for Dogs in the Doghouse
- Finish my 3rd class assignment and forward to instructor
- Declutter in the bedroom

Space Shuttle Sighting

Last night we watched the space shuttle & station fly over (about 200+ miles above) our house. Hubby was watching on the tracker to find out when we'd be able to see it and since it was so nice out, we sat outside watching.

You can go to http://www.n2yo.com/ and find out when it will be flying over YOUR area the next couple of nights. It just looks like a very bright star that's moving. It was pretty cool.

Happy St. Patrick's Day

borrowed from ishrona on Flickr
Spring is here! The robins are singing. There is a nice breeze that's helping dry things up. I can't believe how gorgeous it is outside! Yesterday we hit about 53 degrees F. Today it's 69 degrees F. I think we went right to summer, but I'm not complaining. At least it isn't snow or ice. The only bad this is that now I won't want to stay inside and do my homework for my class. I am using the laptop, so I could do it outside.

Weekend Summary

Good thing I made a lot of progress on Friday because Saturday and Sunday were kind of a bust. Sunday I felt run down. I'm not sure if I'm getting sick or something else. I haven't been watching what I'm eating as well as I should so that could be it too. Plus Saturday night I smacked my foot into the end table so Sunday my baby toe was all black & blue and hurt when I walked.

I'm not sure how much sewing I'll get this week since my online class starts today. I should get that done first before I do any sewing. Plus it's finally nice outside. Today we're in the 50s so I might want to spend some time outside too.

My goals for the weekend are:
  • Make Apple Cider Medallion Blk#4
  • Finish quilting 30s Pinwheel Stars
  • Work on Step 4 for Dogs in the Doghouse (Judy's Quilt-Along) - need to finish last border
  • Cut and piece binding for 30s Pinwheel Stars - I pulled out my container of 30s fabrics.
  • Work on feathered star for Washington Medallion - almost done

Week #11 Stash Report

No fabric added this week! I used 7.75 yards (Recipe for Friendship, Judy's Quilt-Along, and backing for Snapshots in Pink). I'm back to where I was before my additions last week.

Yesterday I was looking at the list of vendors for the Chicago Quilt Show and, even though it's still a month away, I'm starting to get excited about going. I've started making a list to keep me focused. I hope to stay busy using fabric the next couple of weeks so my numbers aren't so staggering that weekend.

My numbers to date:
  • Fabric Added: 0 yards
  • Fabric Added to Date: 43 yards
  • Fabric Used: 7.75 yards
  • Fabric Used to Date: 69.50 yards
  • Net Used: 26.50 yards
Goals for the week:
  • Finish Step 4 of the Quilt-Along
  • Cut binding, machine sew to front and work on hand sewing the 30s Pinwheel Stars
  • Finish loading Snapshots in Pink
  • Finish the Feathered Star for the Washington Medallion
  • Start a new project?

Happy Birthday

Happy 5th Birthday Riley!
May you have many, many more!

He looks a little cranky in this picture, but we had just gotten done playing. He takes playing very seriously. He's never really had a "soft" (looking) face like most Samoyeds do.

Friday Progress Report

It's been a busy day. I worked on several projects today, usually sewing for about an hour, taking a half hour or hour break and then sewing another hour, etc.

First I finished Apple Cider Medallion Block #4.

Then I finished quilting the 30s Pinwheel Stars top. I've taken it off of the frame, but still have to cut and piece the binding strips. I grabbed the next project, pieced the backing for Snapshots In the Pink and got the backing loaded to the frame.

In between my breaks of watching the girl's bball games, I worked on paper-piecing the Washington Medallion BOM feathered star. This is how far I got today.

Here is a (not so great) picture of the Recipe for Friendship top I finished yesterday. I must have accidentally turned a couple of the blocks because there are some noticeable spots where the same fabrics are next to each other. I'm not ripping it apart. I was thinking about combining this fabric collection with the Baskets of Friends FQs that I just got but decided I'll use those FQs for the backing. I might piece that together tomorrow.

That's it for today. The rest of the night you can find me on the couch watching bball!!!

Weekend Goals

It's the weekend! I took tomorrow off to get some sewing done and to watch some of the girl's state basketball games. Not to mention tomorrow is Friday the 13th again. Yikes!

Tonight I finished sewing together the Recipe for Friendship top. I'll take a picture tomorrow. Also started cutting the pieces for Apple Cider Medallion #4.

My goals for the weekend are (in no particular order):
  • Make Apple Cider Medallion Blk#4
  • Finish quilting 30s Pinwheel Stars
  • Work on Step 4 for Dogs in the Doghouse (Judy's Quilt-Along)
  • Cut and piece binding for 30s Pinwheel Stars
  • Work on feathered star for Washington Medallion

Sunday Ramblings

My bear paw blocks are complete. Thank you to everyone who commented on my post yesterday asking for advice on what sashing fabric to use. I had to perform some minor surgery as three paws (top of the picture) had gotten caught in bear traps and needed to have their "wounds" attended to. The wounds have all healed and are ready for the next step.

This gives a new meaning to the Dyson Animal vacuum cleaner. Several months ago hubby was vacuuming up the dog hair (mostly Sonny's since he forever is shedding) and the boys are curious about the vacuum. Well one must have jumped up on the couch and hubby decided to get some hair before it fell on the floor. Here Sonny is today getting "vacuumed". Both boys had just gotten a pedicure (nails cut and paws trimmed) which required the vacuum to clean up the mess.

I also forgot to post this last week. I have a little brag. Last Sonday, Sonny's son Harley became a champion at the Milwaukee dog show. This is the first of Sonny's "children" to become a champion. Harley's sister, Raven, is almost finished too...just needs five single points yet.

Friday I received the software for my Excel class. Yesterday I loaded it on the laptop so I'm ready for class to start a week from tomorrow!!!

Remember how excited I was that the snow/ice was melting the other day?!?! Well guess what? So far today we've had rain, snow and now sleet. Hubby just said we could get 4-8 inches of snow. Ugh! Mother Nature knock it off already....bring out the sun and 40-50 degree weather!

Week #10 Stash Report

My numbers took a hit this week, although I had fun and love my new fabrics. I ordered some cream background for Washington Medallion because I want to use the same fabric throughout and I didn't have enough in my stash. I also found two other fabrics. One that will work for a backing or border on a red, black, and white top I'm going to work on in the near future and a blue fabric that I'll use on future QOV blocks. I made myself checkout after those 3 fabrics because I could have easily added more to my cart. That was 13 yards and my monthly FQ bundle came from Fat Quarter Shop so that is another 3 yards. My total yardage in was 16 yards. Man it adds up fast.

Luckily I made some progress yesterday in the sewing room to offset some of the added fabric. I made all of the bear paws for the Quilt-Along, also cut up several FQs for a project I'm starting using the Sweet Sixteen pattern by Judy Reynolds. I am using the Recipe for Friendship monthly FQ bundle from last year. I am also going to use the Baskets of Flowers FQ bundle I just got since they coordinate with Recipe for Friendship. I'm not a real big fan of Mary Englebreit so I'll use them all up in this top. ;0) I also started on Washington Medallion and I'm going to count all 6 yards of the background fabric now. So my used total is 8 yards.

My numbers to date:
  • Fabric Added: 16 yards
  • Fabric Added to Date: 43 yards
  • Fabric Used: 8 yards
  • Fabric Used to Date: 61.75 yards
  • Net Used: 18.75 yards

I'm really excited to see that I'm over 50 yards used already and it's only March. I'm a little disappointed about the amount added but there really hasn't been anything that has been "just because" until this week and actually I do have something in mind for them. Everything has been bought for a specific project.

My goal for this coming week is:

  • finish bear paw blocks today
  • finish quilting 30s Pinwheel star
  • continue working on the feathered star for Washington Medallion
  • continue cutting FQs for Recipe for Friendship Flower Baskets

HELP! Advice Please!

I need your help. I can't decide on what fabric to use for the sashing on my bear paw blocks. I need to get the fabric cut tomorrow.

Here are a couple options. I think I have it narrowed down to two, but would like some advice. Please post a comment on what number fabric you think I should use. Thanks in advance for your help!

#1 - Yellow

#2 - Teal
#3 - Red

#4 - Medium blue w/purple

#5 - Coral red
